DESCRIPTION
- Verso: Old Christie’s auction house number: '572CB'. 1 deep red wax seal with Coronet and an unidentifiable coat of arms (possibly Italian?), similar comparatives date to the C16-17th century.
CONDITION
Good, Some old retouching to the Virgin’s face and Child’s hand.
PROVENANCE
Purchased from a Southern German private collection, previously the collection of the renowned Sir Edmund Anthony Harley Lechmere, 3rd Baronet* (1826-1894) coming from his Rhydd Court Estate (Worchestirshire) auctioned at Christie’s London (then Christie, Manson & Woods, King Street London) on Wednesday 27th March 1918.
*known as a pioneer of the Red Cross, a senior partner in the Worcester Old Bank and the family bank, Lechmere & Co, was a British Conservative Party politician, Lechmere and his wife were among the founders of Venerable Order of St John. They had travelled several times to Jerusalem and were involved in the establishment of The St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital.
